Are you constantly being bombarded with junk mail, spam emails, and telemarketing calls? The good news is you don’t have to be! There are organizations in place that can take you off of advertisers’ lists. All you have to do is ask! While this may not get rid of everything, it will definitely help reduce the unwanted clutter around the house. Below are the steps you can take to remove yourself from annoying solicitations.
Tired of having your mailbox stuffed with offers and coupons? If you are constantly throwing away junk mail, consider registering at the Direct Marketing Association’s (DMA) consumer website: www.DMAchoice.org. It only costs 2 dollars and will opt you out of mail solicitations for 10 years. They offer easy step by step instructions and offer a way to do it by mail if you would prefer (that costs 3 dollars).
Sick of constantly unsubscribing to email newsletters? Company’s seem to like adding users to their email list whether they opt in or not. Some emails get very creative by hiding or minimizing the unsubscribe option, required for CAN-SPAM compliance. You can click “mark as junk” which will help you not get emails from that server in the future, or you can try DMA’s email opt out service. Unfortunately this will not stop all commercial emails, only emails from advertisers that use the eMPS to clean their lists.
Annoyed by phone calls at the worst times? The National Do Not Call Registry is a free government service designed to prevent unwanted calls. To register your phone number visit www.donotcall.gov, or call 1-888-382-1222 from the phone number you want to register. They have an option to do it via mail as well. Once you register, it will take 31 days to stop receiving unsolicited calls. You only need to register once, and any emails saying your registration is about to expire is a scam. If you are on a mobile device, consider downloading a call-blocker app.
Credit Card Offers
Pre-screened credit offers are not only annoying, they put you at risk of credit card fraud if sensitive information gets in the wrong hands. Make sure to shred credit offers that have any information that can lead to identity theft. To prevent insurance or credit card companies from sending these offers, you can opt out permanently or for 5 years. To opt out for five years call 1-888-567-8688 or visit www.optoutprescreen.com. You will need to provide detailed personal information so do not do this on a public computer. To opt out forever, you must return the signed Permanent Opt-Out Election form, which will be provided after you initiate your online request.
That’s it! You can now enjoy the peace and quiet with much less unwanted solicitations and clutter.
